Located in St. Joseph Missouri, the birthplace of the Pony Express, this building has stood the test of time atop the hill at the corner of 14th and Olive. From dates etched into timbers in the buildings attic by workmen we know construction originally began in 1856.
In 1917 The Everett School was built on this site. This structure and the site to the north contained various schoolhouses over the years, but this all-brick structure is the only one to remain. The gymnasium and another addition to the northwest, as well as the main boiler house on the north, make up the current complex under renovation. The connecting tunnel to the now removed High School on the north still remains but has been capped at the property line.
Foutch Brothers has converted the complex into 22 market rate apartment units sized from 400 square foot studios all the way up to 1200 square foot 3 bedroom, 2 bath units. The gymnasium will remain as a fitness center for the residents and the large expanse of surfaced parking will be converted back to lawn space for the residents.
