One of the earliest and most successful businesses in the Kansas Territory was the furniture company established in 1856 by Colonel James L. Abernathy and his brothers, William and John. Abernathy Brothers Furniture of Leavenworth became a highly visible regional business, lasting nearly a century. The Foutch Brothers have embellished this heritage by creating a tribute to the Abernathys through their building design and furniture displays throughout the building.
This 54-Unit Affordable Senior Living Facility is located on the corner of 2nd & Seneca and was rebuilt in the 1880s after the original facility was destroyed by fire, and then became the main manufacturing structure. The western building was added in the 1890s as the lumber yard and warehouse. Finally, in 1905, the two buildings were enclosed and joined together via the center building, where the main entrance is located today.
The re-development began in 2001 and construction was complete in October of 2003. Due to the shape of the building, all 54 units are unique; apartments range from one bedroom units to 2-story loft apartments with 2 bedrooms and 2 lofted spaces. Exposed structural wood beams and columns are featured in each apartment and the common areas have additional exposed brick, doors and other architectural features original to the building.
The Abernathy Lofts won a Kansas Preservation Award of Excellence and was also a National Main Street Redevelopment Award winner.
